Nick Arseneau is a Toronto-based upright and electric bassist, composer, and music educator. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from York University in 2014 and a Master of Music in Jazz Bass Performance from the University of Toronto in 2016.
As a jazz artist, Nick has toured in Canada with Brownman Ali and Nick Maclean. In 2020 Nick traveled to Africa to perform with the Shuffle Demons. Nick received the Jazz.FM91 Mary Alice Stuart scholarship in 2013 and was featured as a Jazz.FM91 Jazzology All-Star in a live-to-air performance in 2015 alongside artists such as Sarah Thawer, Heather Bambrick, Kelly Jefferson, and William Carn. In 2020 he released his first jazz album as bandleader, To Niagara, With Love, and in 2021 a track from this album was featured on a Jazz.FM91 compilation CD. Nick has also performed with Canadian jazz artists such as Mike Murley, Frank Botos, Jeff King, and Andy Balantyne.
Outside of jazz, Nick's creative work spans many genres. As a beat producer, his electronic synth pop project Gulangyu was featured on CBC Radio 1's Big City, Small World in 2020. As guitarist and frontman for indie-ska-punk band Small Town Get Up, Nick has opened for prominent ska bands The English Beat, Five Iron Frenzy, The Planet Smashers, The Toasters, and Mustard Plug. Small Town Get Up also had two songs featured in the 2016 video Grip it and Whippet which showcased professional mountain biker Kelly McGarry. His other work includes collaborations with folk/country artist Brittany Brooks, session work with Juno-nominated singer/songwriter Jordan Raycroft, and performing with math rock bands Chronophobe and Growing Fins, the latter of which released a selftitled EP on American label Old Press Records in 2021.
Nick is an active music educator and teaches at the Orchard Montessori and the Orchard Lyceum schools in Toronto. He is currently pursuing a Master of Teaching degree at OISE, University of Toronto. Nick has composed scores for several independent films and collaborated with dance projects Coexisdance and Kinima Dance. On the business side of the music industry, Nick runs Ledger Lines Tax, a freelance income tax practice specializing in musicians and other freelance professional artists.
